Anaesthesia

As a consultant anaesthetist, my role is vital in ensuring your safety and comfort during bariatric surgery. My expertise in administering anaesthesia and monitoring the patient's well-being is crucial for a successful surgical outcome.

General anaesthesia is a controlled state of unconsciousness induced by medications. It allows patients to undergo surgery without feeling pain or being aware of the procedure.

Before the surgery, I'll meet with you to discuss your medical history, any allergies, and any concerns you may have. It's important for you to be completely honest about your health so that I can tailor the anaesthesia plan accordingly. If you are on any medications that need altering prior to your surgery, I will contact you to discuss this.

On the day of the surgery, you will be taken to the operating room. Here, my team and I will ensure you're positioned comfortably on the operating table. We will attach monitors to measure vital signs like heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels.

I'll administer the anaesthesia through a drip in your arm. This medication will gradually make you fall asleep. You won't feel any pain, or be aware of what's happening around you.

Throughout the surgery, I'll closely monitor your vital signs to make sure they are stable. In addition to anaesthesia, I'll work with the surgical team to provide pain relief. This may involve using local anaesthetics and other pain management techniques. I will also administer medication to help reduce the chance of nausea and vomiting after the operation. This is particularly important for bariatric surgery.

Once the surgery is complete, I'll gradually reduce the anaesthesia, allowing the you to wake up. You may feel a bit groggy or disoriented at first, but this is normal.

After the surgery, you will continue to be monitored in the recovery room. The nursing team will make sure you are comfortable, and help to manage any pain or nausea. Once you’re stable, you will be moved back to your room for further recovery.

I will visit you afterwards to make sure that you are comfortable and answer any questions you may have, and to ensure that your recovery is as smooth as possible.
